Lesson 4: Gather Necessary Supplies

If you’re gonna run breaks, you’re gonna need more than just cards and a camera. Having the right supplies makes your life so much easier and keeps your buyers happy too.

First off, you need card protection. That means plenty of penny sleeves and top loaders…like, way more than you think. Every decent card should at least get a sleeve, and anything remotely valuable should go into a top loader too. It shows people you actually care about their cards and helps prevent issues later if a package gets banged around during shipping. Speaking of top loaders, make sure you have plenty of sizes. Most base cards will fit in a 35 point (standard) top loader, but be sure to get some 180 points and even some between 35 and 180. And don’t forget thick sleeves too.

You’ll also want a breaking mat. Not only does it make your setup look way cleaner and more professional, but it also protects cards while you’re showing them off on camera. Plus, let’s be honest, nobody wants to see you opening cards on your kitchen table next to last night’s pizza box.

Next up: shipping supplies. You’re gonna burn through a ton of stuff like bubble mailers, team bags, small boxes, tape, etc. Shipping adds up fast, so buying supplies in bulk usually saves you some headaches (and money) down the line.

For shipping labels, you should definitely look into a service like Pirateship, Shippo, or Stamps.com. They’ll hook you up with cheaper postage than going straight to USPS. Personally, I’d recommend Shippo (Breaker Toolbox uses it and it works great). And once you start doing a decent volume, invest in a label printer. Trust me, printing labels with scissors and tape gets old real quick.

Another thing to figure out early is your shipping policy. Are you gonna charge for shipping? Offer free shipping and bake it into the break price? A lot of new breakers forget to plan this out and end up eating more costs than they expected. It’s not just the postage: supplies, labor, the whole deal adds up.

Bottom line: being organized with your supplies not only makes you look legit but saves you a ton of time, money, and frustration when things start picking up.
