Lesson 5: Determine Payment Methods and Fees

Alright, let’s talk money. Specifically, how you’re going to get paid. This part is super important because if you mess it up, it can turn into a major headache fast.

A lot of new breakers just jump straight into using PayPal Friends & Family because there are no fees. And yeah, it sounds good… until PayPal figures out you’re actually running a business. Once they catch on (and they will), they can freeze your account, lock up your money, or even ban you altogether. Not worth the risk.

If you’re serious about breaking, you need to set yourself up with PayPal Business. Yes, they take a cut (around 3%), but it protects both you and your buyers. Plus, it looks more professional. A lot of buyers actually feel safer sending money when it’s through a legit business account.

Another good option is Stripe. It’s super easy to use, fees are about the same as PayPal, and it integrates with a lot of websites if you decide to build your own shop later. Some platforms like Breaker Toolbox even give you the option to use either PayPal or Stripe, which is nice for flexibility.

One thing you have to do: factor the payment fees into your pricing. A $20 spot isn’t really $20 in your pocket after fees. It’s more like $19 and change. Over a whole break, that adds up fast. Build those fees into your spot prices from the start so you’re not cutting into your own margins.

If you decide to sell through platforms like Whatnot or Fanatics Live, just know they take a pretty hefty cut too, usually somewhere between 8–15%. You’re getting more eyeballs on your breaks, which can help you fill spots faster, but you’re also giving up a big chunk of your profits. It’s a trade-off.

Long story short: take payments seriously. Protect yourself, protect your customers, and price your breaks smart so you’re not losing money without even realizing it.
